Day 1
RECEIVE
Luke 8:16-17
16 “No one lights a lamp and then covers it with a bowl or hides it under a bed. A lamp is placed on a stand, where its light can be seen by all who enter the house. 17 For all that is secret will eventually be brought into the open, and everything that is concealed will be brought to light and made known to all.”
Jesus had ended His previous parable about the one who is productive in bearing spiritual fruit. Then He gave the example of lighting a lamp for the purpose of shedding light. It is not to be hidden but seen by all in the house. Jesus made known, however, that even what is in secret will eventually be exposed.
REFLECT
Are you letting your light shine for Jesus? Can others tell by your language and life that you love Jesus and want to honor Him?
RESPOND
Visit with a friend about what Jesus also said as recorded in Matthew 5:14-15. Believers can let their lives reveal who Jesus is by reading and obeying Ephesians 4:17-32. A changed life will show others you are a follower of Jesus.
Day 2
RECEIVE
Luke 8:18
18 “So pay attention to how you hear. To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given. But for those who are not listening, even what they think they understand will be taken away from them.”
It is serious to hear what Jesus has said and not act accordingly. The one who has an open mind and heart will be given more understanding. For those who are not paying attention to what they are hearing, the little they understand will be taken from them.
REFLECT
Think of the seriousness of glancing at Bible verses but not taking them seriously. Even the little you thought you understood will be taken from you.
RESPOND
Join with a friend in reading what is said in James 1:22-25. Think on this passage and determine to do what the Bible says believers should do.
Day 3
RECEIVE
Luke 8:19-21
19 Then Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see him, but they couldn’t get to him because of the crowd. 20 Someone told Jesus, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, and they want to see you.” 21 Jesus replied, “My mother and my brothers are all those who hear God’s word and obey it.”
Other passages name the earthly half-brothers of Jesus. His sisters are also mentioned but never named (see Mark 6:3). In this passage, however, Jesus expanded the meaning to refer to everyone who hears God’s word and does it.
REFLECT
Is it your delight to read the Scriptures and then seek to put the teaching into practice?
RESPOND
Think of being considered the brother and sister of Jesus if you receive His word and live out those truths. Discuss this with a friend and rejoice together.
Day 4
RECEIVE
Luke 8:22-23
22 One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and started out. 23 As they sailed across, Jesus settled down for a nap. But soon a fierce storm came down on the lake. The boat was filling with water, and they were in real danger.
The Sea of Galilee (known by various names) was well-known for its sudden and violent storms. The sea is said to be from 80 to 160 feet deep. Jesus was taking a nap. The disciples were alarmed when the boat began filling up with water. They knew they were in serious danger.
REFLECT
What would you have thought if you were in a boat in a storm on such a deep lake?
RESPOND
Frequently fear is an opportunity for the Lord to work in a person’s life. Are you going through something now that causes you fear? Trust the sovereign Lord Jesus Christ to give you peace.
Day 5
RECEIVE
Luke 8:24-25
24 The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!” When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and the raging waves. Suddenly the storm stopped and all was calm. 25 Then he asked them, “Where is your faith?” The disciples were terrified and amazed. “Who is this man?” they asked each other. “When he gives a command, even the wind and waves obey him!”
In their fear, the disciples quickly went to Jesus who was sleeping peacefully. When they awakened Him, He got up and rebuked the wind and waves. Suddenly everything was calm. Imagine the disciples at this calm moment. Jesus asked, “Where is your faith?” The disciples were alarmed at who Jesus was, that He could cause the wind and waves to be calm.
REFLECT
Have you experienced a time when God worked on your behalf to bring about calm during a storm in your life? Praise Him for His goodness.
RESPOND
Visit with a friend about how anxious the disciples were when Jesus indicated He would soon be leaving them. John 14:1-7 has been a comfort to many. Some have used it to minister to a grieving family after a loved one has died.
