Day 1
RECEIVE
Luke 8:36-37
36 Then those who had seen what happened told the others how the demon-possessed man had been healed. 37 And all the people in the region of the Gerasenes begged Jesus to go away and leave them alone, for a great wave of fear swept over them. So Jesus returned to the boat and left, crossing back to the other side of the lake.
The crowd saw what had happened with all the pigs drowning. They also realized the demon-possessed man had been healed and they told others. Such startling things caused the people to ask Jesus to go away. Those previously frightened by the demon-possessed man are now afraid after seeing him healed. Jesus went away as requested and went to the other side of the lake.
REFLECT
Does what happened seem strange to you? Why were they afraid of these spectacular events?
RESPOND
Would you not have thought that the people would have wanted Jesus to stay with them and perform more miracles? Discuss with a friend what must have caused the people to be frightened.
Day 2
RECEIVE
Luke 8:38-39
38 The man who had been freed from the demons begged to go with him. But Jesus sent him home, saying, 39 “No, go back to your family, and tell them everything God has done for you.” So he went all through the town proclaiming the great things Jesus had done for him.
The man who had been healed wanted to go with Jesus. Instead, Jesus wanted him to go back to his family and tell them what all had occurred. This man who had experienced the miracle “went all through the town proclaiming the great things Jesus had done for him.” No one could deny his changed life.
REFLECT
Does this cause you to wonder why sometimes Jesus told some not to tell and this person to tell everyone? Does this encourage you to tell others of the change Jesus has made in your life?
RESPOND
Talk with a friend about the difference of instructions Jesus gave those He healed. A likely reason is that this was on the east side of the Sea of Galilee where there were mostly Gentiles. On the west side were mostly Jews who wanted to make Jesus King before His time.
Day 3
RECEIVE
Luke 8:40-42
40 On the other side of the lake the crowds welcomed Jesus, because they had been waiting for him. 41 Then a man named Jairus, a leader of the local synagogue, came and fell at Jesus’ feet, pleading with him to come home with him. 42 His only daughter, who was about twelve years old, was dying. As Jesus went with him, he was surrounded by the crowds.
Jesus now returned to the west side of the Sea of Galilee. There a leader of the local synagogue fell at His feet in worship. His request was that Jesus would heal his only child who was a daughter. Jesus agreed to go with him. On the way He was surrounded by people.
REFLECT
This passage reveals the leader of the synagogue had faith that Jesus could heal his daughter.
RESPOND
The Bible does not record Jesus’ emotions about this request to heal an “only daughter.” One wonders if this reminded Him that He was the “only Son” of the heavenly Father. Whatever His emotions, He agreed to go visit the daughter. As usual there were crowds around Him.
Day 4
RECEIVE
Luke 8:43-44
43 A woman in the crowd had suffered for twelve years with constant bleeding, and she could find no cure. 44 Coming up behind Jesus, she touched the fringe of his robe. Immediately, the bleeding stopped.
As Jesus was on the way to heal a daughter about 12 years old, a woman in the crowd who had suffered from constant bleeding for 12 years touched the fringe of His robe. There was previously no cure for her, but she had confidence that Jesus could heal her. When she touched His garment, the bleeding immediately stopped.
REFLECT
Do you wonder how this woman even thought that she could be healed by touching Jesus’ garment? Usually a person would appeal for Jesus to touch him or her.
RESPOND
See another instance of the power the apostle Paul used to heal people. Read Acts 19:11-16 and also learn what happened to others who tried to mimic the apostle’s ability to heal.
Day 5
RECEIVE
Luke 8:45-46
45 “Who touched me?” Jesus asked. Everyone denied it, and Peter said, “Master, this whole crowd is pressing up against you.” 46 But Jesus said, “Someone deliberately touched me, for I felt healing power go out from me.”
The situation was similar to a busy marketplace in those days. People jostled against each other in the crowd. Peter tried to explain away the incident, but Jesus said, “Someone deliberately touched me, for I felt healing power go out from me.” Others could have touched Him and He would have felt nothing special, but in this instance He felt healing power go out from Him.
REFLECT
There is no need to seek to understand how all of this was possible. All that is needed is to believe the Word of God.
RESPOND
Talk with a friend about some things that need to be taken by faith. Hebrews 11 is an example. Hebrews 11:1-3 reveals believers need to take the origin of the universe by faith. No one was there to witness it so it cannot be proven or disproven by the scientific process. Salvation comes to those by grace through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ (see Ephesians 2:8-9, ESV).
