Day 1
RECEIVE
Luke 9:30-31
30 Suddenly, two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared and began talking with Jesus. 31 They were glorious to see. And they were speaking about his exodus from this world, which was about to be fulfilled in Jerusalem.
As Jesus was on the Mount of Transfiguration with Peter, James and John, suddenly Moses and Elijah appeared and talked with Jesus. Luke writes, “They were glorious to see.” These Old Testament prophets spoke about the time when Jesus would ascend to the Father after His 33 years on earth.
REFLECT
Imagine what a sight it was for Jesus to see Moses and Elijah.
RESPOND
With a friend read Acts 1:9-11 for the record of Jesus’ ascension into heaven that Moses and Elijah were prophesying.
Day 2
RECEIVE
Luke 9:32-34
32 Peter and the others had fallen asleep. When they woke up, they saw Jesus’ glory and the two men standing with him. 33 As Moses and Elijah were starting to leave, Peter, not even knowing what he was saying, blurted out, “Master, it’s wonderful for us to be here! Let’s make three shelters as memorials—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 34 But even as he was saying this, a cloud overshadowed them, and terror gripped them as the cloud covered them.
While Moses and Elijah had appeared to Jesus, Peter, James and John were sleeping. They woke up when Moses and Elijah were about to leave. Impetuous Peter blurted out about making three shelters in which Jesus, Moses and Elijah could dwell. None of them needed a shelter. They became overshadowed with a cloud and fear captured their thoughts as it covered them.
REFLECT
Can you imagine the shock of what Peter, James and John saw when they woke up? What would they do next?
RESPOND
Talk with a friend about some unusual happenings you have seen. Often people insist on being able to explain something. The late Bible teacher of Back to the Bible, Warren W. Wiersbe was known for saying, “If you can explain it; then God didn’t do it.”
Day 3
RECEIVE
Luke 9:35-36
35 Then a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, my Chosen One. Listen to him.” 36 When the voice finished, Jesus was there alone. They didn’t tell anyone at that time what they had seen.
As if the disciples were not frightened enough, now a voice is heard from heaven. It said, “This is my Son, my Chosen One. Listen to him.” Then Jesus was left alone. The disciples were so awestruck they did not tell others what they had seen.
REFLECT
Who would have believed the three disciples if they had told others what they had experienced? Would you have in that day?
RESPOND
Remember wondering about what Luke 9:27 promised? It was fulfilled when the three disciples saw a glimpse of the Kingdom of God before they died. Talk about this with a friend.
Day 4
RECEIVE
Luke 9:37-40
37 The next day, after they had come down the mountain, a large crowd met Jesus. 38 A man in the crowd called out to him, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, my only child. 39 An evil spirit keeps seizing him, making him scream. It throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It batters him and hardly ever leaves him alone. 40 I begged your disciples to cast out the spirit, but they couldn’t do it.”
When they came down from the mountain, a man in the crowd called out to Jesus to look at his only son. Again one wonders if it especially caught the attention of the only Son of God when He was asked to look at the man’s only son. The child’s father described the horrific experiences his child was having because of the evil spirit. The disciples had been asked to help but they were unable to do so.
REFLECT
Do you realize that sometimes believers can’t help others unless Jesus chooses to do so?
RESPOND
Discuss with a friend about trying to do something in your own strength but failing. Pray about depending on God to work out His plans in your life. Praying for God’s will to be done is praying for that which will glorify Him.
Day 5
RECEIVE
Luke 9:41-43a
41 Jesus said, “You faithless and corrupt people! How long must I be with you and put up with you?” Then he said to the man, “Bring your son here.” 42 As the boy came forward, the demon knocked him to the ground and threw him into a violent convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the evil spirit and healed the boy. Then he gave him back to his father. 43a Awe gripped the people as they saw this majestic display of God’s power.
Jesus did not have kind words for His listeners. He asked the boy to be brought to Him. As the boy came the evil spirit knocked him to the ground and threw him into a convulsion. Jesus rebuked the evil spirit, healed the boy, and “Then he gave him back to his father.” This display of God’s power left the people speechless.
REFLECT
Have you sometime been rendered speechless as you have seen God work?
RESPOND
Examine some Scriptures with your friend about God’s power. Read Ephesians 1:15-23 to see how the apostle Paul prayed for the believers in Ephesus—and by extension all believers.
