Luke Part 3 Week 20

Day 1

RECEIVE

Luke 22:28-30

28 “You have stayed with me in my time of trial. 29 And just as my Father has granted me a Kingdom, I now grant you the right 30 to eat and drink at my table in my Kingdom. And you will sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”

This passage reveals there are future rewards for what followers of Jesus do. Because the disciples had stayed with Jesus in His time of trial, they would be rewarded in the kingdom when He would be ruling over the kingdom of David. This is another indication that His kingdom will be on earth.

REFLECT

Do you realize that someday Jesus will reward you for what you have done to bring Him glory?

RESPOND

Visit with a friend about what the believers in Israel were expecting about the coming kingdom of David. Read Mark 11:9-10 to see what they were shouting during His triumphal entry. Read Luke 1:29-33 for what the angel told Mary about the child that would be born to her. Especially notice Luke 1:32.

Day 2

RECEIVE

Luke 22:31-32

31 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift each of you like wheat. 32 But I have pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail. So when you have repented and turned to me again, strengthen your brothers.”

Notice that the result of Jesus pleading for Simon Peter in His prayers was that he would eventually strengthen his brothers. To do that Peter needed to repent (change his mind) and turn to Jesus. It would not be enough to change his mind if he didn’t turn to Jesus. Scriptures bear out how Peter was later used to preach and strengthen his fellow disciples.

REFLECT

Does this help you to see that when a believer has a problem he can confess his sin and turn to Jesus who forgives, as 1 John 1:9 says?

RESPOND

Join with a friend in reading John 21:15-17. It records a conversation between Jesus and Peter to cause him to admit he didn’t love Jesus any more than the other disciples. This experience was used to restore Peter to his position of leadership. Read also Acts 2:14-41 for Peter’s sermon on the day of Pentecost and how many believed as a result and were added to the Church.

Day 3

RECEIVE

Luke 22:33-34

33 Peter said, “Lord, I am ready to go to prison with you, and even to die with you.” 34 But Jesus said, “Peter, let me tell you something. Before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know me.”

In response to what Jesus told him, Peter boasted how he was willing to die with Jesus if necessary. Then Jesus predicted how Peter would deny him three times before the rooster crowed in the morning. This also reveals these events were occurring at night. That will be seen to be significant in comparing the gospel accounts.

REFLECT

Have you sometimes denied Jesus by not speaking up for Him when you should have? Just as Jesus forgave Peter He can forgive you. Sometimes people intimidate us but the believer is accountable to God, not to his friends.

RESPOND

No one is perfect and there is no way one can remember to confess every sin he or she has committed. There are some who think that is necessary to have the sin forgiven, but at the cross Jesus paid for all sins, as 1 John 1:7 says.

Day 4

RECEIVE

Luke 22:35

35 Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you out to preach the Good News and you did not have money, a traveler’s bag, or an extra pair of sandals, did you need anything?” “No,” they replied.

Previously when Jesus sent the disciples out to spread His message to the lost sheep of Israel they did not need to take extra food and equipment with them. Apparently they would be welcomed by some who would provide for them. The disciples agreed all of their needs had been met.

REFLECT

Have you found fellow believers to be responsive in your time of need? Have you been of help to other believers?

RESPOND

As one reads the New Testament there are instructions found about helping others. Read 1 Timothy 5:3-16 about making provision for widows. When churches and families have failed to do this the burden falls on other organizations and even the government with results that are not as satisfying.

Day 5

RECEIVE

Luke 22:36-37

36 “But now,” he said, “take your money and a traveler’s bag. And if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one! 37 For the time has come for this prophecy about me to be fulfilled: ‘He was counted among the rebels.’ Yes, everything written about me by the prophets will come true.”

Jesus warned His disciples that times would be more difficult for them. They were even to buy a sword for protection. Jesus referred to what the prophet Isaiah had written about Him in Isaiah 53:12. Remember that when Jesus was on earth the only Scriptures available were what is now known as the Old Testament.

REFLECT

If you were confined to using only the Old Testament, do you think you could find much telling you about the Savior?

RESPOND

Join with a friend and read two passages in the Old Testament that seem to point clearly to the Lord Jesus Christ. One passage is Isaiah 53 that has only 12 verses. Another is Psalm 22. See especially verses 1-2, 7-8, 12-18 that seem to point to the life and crucifixion of Jesus.
