Philippians 1:15-17
15 It’s true that some are preaching out of jealousy and rivalry. But others preach about Christ with pure motives. 16 They preach because they love me, for they know I have been appointed to defend the Good News. 17 Those others do not have pure motives as they preach about Christ. They preach with selfish ambition, not sincerely, intending to make my chains more painful to me.
Paul knew about those who were preaching with impure motives. Likely they were taking pleasure in his imprisonment. They may have been preaching the right message but with the wrong motives. They hoped their preaching would make Paul’s prison experience bitter instead of better. Others were preaching with the right motives because they loved Paul and knew he was defending the gospel.
REFLECT
Have you thought about being sure to give the right message with the right motives?
RESPOND
Talk with your disciple about the need for believers not to be jealous of other believers. This includes one group not being jealous of another who has a larger group or a more popular pastor. Or of others who have led more to Jesus than you have.
