Philippians 1:27
27 Above all, you must live as citizens of heaven, conducting yourselves in a manner worthy of the Good News about Christ. Then, whether I come and see you again or only hear about you, I will know that you are standing together with one spirit and one purpose, fighting together for the faith, which is the Good News.
The Philippian believers would know what Paul was referring to when he referred to “citizens.” When he was arrested, beaten and jailed along with Silas, Paul later made an issue about his Roman citizenship. Now here he says the believer’s real citizenship is in heaven. Paul wanted believers to live worthy of the gospel. Notice his emphasis on doing things together: he wanted them to stand together in one spirit and purpose and to fight together for the faith. He described “the faith” as “the Good News;” that is, the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.
REFLECT
Do you tend to do things by yourself or work with other believers?
RESPOND
Read Acts 16:35-40 to see the issue Paul’s made of his citizenship after he was released from jail.
