Philippians 2:16-18
16 Hold firmly to the word of life; then, on the day of Christ’s return, I will be proud that I did not run the race in vain and that my work was not useless. 17 But I will rejoice even if I lose my life, pouring it out like a liquid offering to God, just like your faithful service is an offering to God. And I want all of you to share that joy. 18 Yes, you should rejoice, and I will share your joy.
As Paul was writing the believers did not have the completed Bible but what they had Paul wanted them to “hold firmly” to its teaching. If they did that he would know his ministry among them was profitable. If they held fast to the “word” of life,” Paul viewed two offerings involved: 1) his life being poured out as a drink offering, and 2) their service was an offering to God. Both he and they should rejoice in this. Although writing from prison, Paul often referred to rejoicing.
REFLECT
As Paul did, are you able to rejoice in the midst of difficulties? Realizing God has a sovereign plan for your life will enable you to do this.
RESPOND
Regarding holding firmly to the word of life, talk to your disciple about being in the Bible at least four times a week. Share with each other what you are reading. Talk about what you have been learning from your reading.
