RECEIVE
Titus 1:5-6
5 I left you on the island of Crete so you could complete our work there and appoint elders in each town as I instructed you. 6 An elder must live a blameless life. He must be faithful to his wife, and his children must be believers who don’t have a reputation for being wild or rebellious.
Paul had been in Crete before, but he left Titus there to complete the work. Titus was to appoint elders in each town. The singular Greek word Paul used for “elders” was presbuteros that referred to an “older person.” The Greek word Paul used in writing to Timothy was episkopos that referred to the church leader as an “overseer” (see 1 Timothy 3:2). Paul began to list the qualifications of an elder in Titus 1:6.
REFLECT
Often when church officers are elected there is a question about what the qualifications should be. You will see them in what Paul listed.
RESPOND
Talk with a friend about what it must mean to be “blameless.” Because no one is perfect, this must only mean that if a person has done wrong he has admitted it and made it right. Some people never admit doing wrong. Such a person would not be qualified to be an elder.
