RECEIVE
Titus 1:7
7 A church leader is a manager of God’s household, so he must live a blameless life. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered; he must not be a heavy drinker, violent, or dishonest with money.
Paul continued with the qualifications to be an elder. Here Paul used the Greek word for “overseer” for the church leader. This indicates a relationship with the word he had used in verse 5 for an older person. Some have even suggested that most of the believers in Crete were new in the faith so an elder would be someone older in the faith, not necessarily older in age.
REFLECT
Talk with a friend about how important each of the qualifications would be for a church leader. The wine in New Testament times was fermented grape juice that was low in alcoholic content. Even then, they would dilute the fermented grape juice with a few parts water. But an elder should not be addicted to it.
RESPOND
Join with a friend from your church to pray for your leaders. Read 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13 to see what the apostle Paul commanded.
