Have you ever poured out your heart to God in desperate prayer, only to be met with total silence? You’ve done the "right" things—you’ve read the Word, you’ve attended church, and you’ve prayed with tears—yet the heavens feel like brass.
This past week on the Spiritually Fit Today podcast, Arnie Cole and theologian Bruce tackle one of the most painful experiences in the Christian life: the perceived absence of God. We often feel that if God is silent, He must be angry, indifferent, or simply not there. But as Bruce points out, silence is not absence, and "unanswered" doesn't mean "unheard."
The Cry of "How Long?"
Our anchor verse for the week was the raw, honest cry of King David in Psalm 13:1: "How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?"
It is incredibly freeing to realize that this verse is in the Bible. It gives us permission to be honest about our pain. Even the David, a "man after God’s own heart" felt forgotten. If you feel like God is hiding His face, you aren't a "bad Christian"—you are in the company of saints and prophets.
The Forge of Durable Faith
Why would a loving God allow His children to experience this silence? Perhaps God is doing His deepest work in the dark. A faith that has never experienced silence is a fragile faith. It’s like a fair-weather friendship that only lasts as long as things are easy. But when we choose to trust God even when we can’t feel Him, we are forging a durable faith. Suffering and silence produce perseverance, and perseverance produces character. This "durable anchor" is what allows you to stand firm when the world around you starts to shake.
Winning Today: The Durable Anchor
You can't win tomorrow until you win today. When you are in a season of silence, trying to figure out the next ten years is overwhelming. Your only job is to "win today" by choosing trust over despair. Winning doesn’t have to be any more complicated than a simple declaration: "Lord, I don't feel you, and I don't see the answer yet, but I know who You are. I choose to trust Your character more than my current circumstances." This daily declaration of trust is what builds an unbreakable faith.
The Declaration of Trust
Your challenge is to stop demanding immediate explanations and start building a durable anchor.
Reflect: Identify one specific area of your life where God has felt absent or silent lately.
Write: Write a one-paragraph Declaration of Trust based on Psalm 13. Acknowledge the pain, but end with the truth of God’s character (e.g., "Lord, it feels like You are hiding, but I know You never leave or forsake Your children...").
Read: Read that paragraph out loud every morning this week.
In the end, more will be revealed. You may not see the "why" today, but God is a master at bringing good out of very bad things. He is the Pioneer and Perfecter of your faith—and He is just as present in the silence as He is in the shouting.
Q1: Does God's silence mean I have unconfessed sin in my life?
A: Not necessarily. While sin can certainly cloud our intimacy with God, many of the most faithful people in the Bible experienced silence.
Q2: How long does a "dark night of the soul" usually last?
A: There is no set timeline. For some, it is a week; for others, a season of years. The goal is not to "get out" of the season as quickly as possible, but to become the person God is forming you to be inside the season.
Q3: What if I feel like I’m losing my faith because of the silence?
A: Doubting in the dark is normal. Bring those doubts to God—He can handle them. Re-reading the Psalms is a great way to see that your "darkness" is a path many have walked before you into a deeper, more durable hope.
Q4: How can I support a friend who is going through a season of God's silence?
A: Don't try to give them "cliché" answers or explain God's plan. Simply sit with them in the silence. Validate their pain and remind them of God’s character without demanding they "cheer up."
