READ
Colossians 3:16-17
16 Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts. 17 And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father.
Believers are to teach and counsel others. Note the singing of psalms. The book of Psalms was known as the hymnbook of Israel. A psalm was something sung to the accompaniment of a stringed instrument. “Hymns” were likely more objective in praising God. “Spiritual songs” likely were more subjective in telling about the experiences of believers. Whatever a believer does should be done as a representative of the Lord Jesus. Paul emphasized giving thanks again.
REFLECT
Think on this passage of Scripture. The “message about Christ” is now found in the Bible. Let it fill your life. In everything act as a representative of Jesus and be thankful.
RESPOND
With your disciple, compare Ephesians 5:18-20 with this passage. These are similar with the exception “Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives” compared with “be filled with the Holy Spirit.” This indicates that one saturated with the Word of God is similar to the one filled with the Spirit.
