LEARNING, LOVING, AND LIVING GOD’S WORD AS A SINGLE PARENT
Agnes’s Story
As a born-again believer, I knew that I wasn't spending as much time in my Bible as I should. I struggled to remain consistent. I’d read my Bible every day for a few weeks and then miss a day. Then I’d miss another day. So, I’d give up. Then I’d feel guilty and start again, determined to do better this time. The cycle continued over and over.
I often heard others talk about how they loved reading the Bible. I wondered what was wrong with me for not feeling the same.
I began asking God to help me love His Word. Over time, I realized He was doing just that. I found myself reading because I wanted to, not because I felt obligated or guilty. I began to understand what I was reading. Things I had read began to come to mind as I went about my day.
This has been especially helpful as a single parent. I often feel alone and afraid. I recall a particular day when I was able to take my time reading my Bible instead of rushing, as I’m still prone to do. It was during a particularly challenging parenting season that the Holy Spirit led me to Isaiah 41:13. When I read those words, I froze. I knew without a doubt that God was speaking directly to me! I didn’t have to parent alone. God would help me. It was amazing to realize that God knows what I need and when I need it.
Ever since that day, I go back to Isaiah 41:13 just to lay eyes on it, to run my fingers across the page, and hear God whisper, “For I, the Lord your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, ‘Fear not, I am the one who helps you.” Believe me when I say He is and has been my help.
Today, I'm a witness to many ways that God answers prayers, including my own. I love God’s Word, and I’m learning to live it as well. Now, when I need an answer to one of life’s many questions, I go to my Bible and ask God to give me an answer. I know that when I’m in God’s Word, I’m never alone.
