Day 1
RECEIVE
Luke 6:39-40
39 Then Jesus gave the following illustration: “Can one blind person lead another? Won’t they both fall into a ditch? 40 Students are not greater than their teacher. But the student who is fully trained will become like the teacher.”
Jesus reminded His disciples that a blind person cannot be a leader of others. One must be able to see where he is going. Jesus also let His disciples know that when they became fully trained they would be like Him. This is why a teacher invests his or her life into students. It should be the students’ desire to become like their teacher.
REFLECT
Can you think of a teacher you had that caused you to want to be like him or her?
RESPOND
Some teach in situations where they are not permitted to express spiritual truths. Such believers can be encouraged by Galatians 5:22-23. Notice the last statement in these verses. No restriction can prevent them from showing the fruit of the Spirit in their lives. Pray for teachers you know.
Day 2
RECEIVE
Luke 6:41-42
41 “And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own? 42 How can you think of saying, ‘Friend, let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.”
It is easy to see a problem others have, but not as easy to recognize a larger problem that you may have. Jesus encouraged people to deal with their own problem before trying to help others. When one’s heart is clear of offense then he or she can have a good ministry encouraging others with their problems.
REFLECT
Does this passage remind you of anything in your life? Did you deal with it before attempting to help others with their problems?
RESPOND
Visit with a friend about what Jesus says to individuals about examining their hearts. Read 1 Corinthians 11:27-32 for instructions to follow before participating in the Lord’s Supper.
Day 3
RECEIVE
Luke 6:43-45
43 “A good tree can’t produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can’t produce good fruit. 44 A tree is identified by its fruit. Figs are never gathered from thornbushes, and grapes are not picked from bramble bushes. 45 A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart.”
When referring to people, Jesus told where good and evil come from. They come from the individuals’ hearts. Their conversation reveals what is in their hearts. Those who are right with God by believing in Jesus reflect the goodness and kindness of Jesus in their words. Believers can be a good testimony by their life and conversation.
REFLECT
Do you realize you can be a good witness about Jesus by your life and language? Others will notice and may ask you how that is possible for you. Then you can tell them about Jesus.
RESPOND
Join with a friend in praying that others will notice the difference that Jesus has made in your lives. Be ready to give an answer if you are asked questions about why you are like you are. See 1 Peter 3:15-17 and follow the advice.
Day 4
RECEIVE
Luke 6:46-47
46 “So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say? 47 I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it.”
Jesus is Lord, in that He is God. Because of this He should be the master of the lives who say they know Him. Those who demonstrate Jesus is the master of their lives are those who do what He says. They follow His teaching. Jesus then said He would show His listeners what it is like for those who follow His teaching.
REFLECT
If you have placed your faith in Jesus, are you also concerned about following His teaching?
RESPOND
Talk with a friend about how serious it would be to say you believe in Jesus but not treat Him as the Lord of your life. The decisions you make should reflect your desire to honor Him in all you do. See Ephesians 5:1-2 in this regard.
Day 5
RECEIVE
Luke 6:48-49
48 “It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built. 49 But anyone who hears and doesn’t obey is like a person who builds a house right on the ground, without a foundation. When the floods sweep down against that house, it will collapse into a heap of ruins.”
Jesus said He would show His listeners what it is like for one who hears and follows His teaching. These verses reveal it is like a person who builds his house on a rock. The one who does not follow His teaching is like the one who builds his house without a good foundation.
REFLECT
Are you like the one who built with a good foundation, or like the one who did not build with a good foundation? The answer has to do with whether you are following Jesus’ teaching.
RESPOND
Talk with a friend about your wish to be known as a follower of Jesus. Read Ephesians 1:1-2 to see how Paul addressed the believers in Ephesus. Make it your desire to be known as a faithful follower of Jesus.
