Broken Vows
READ
Malachi 2:13-14
13 Here is another thing you do. You cover the LORD’s altar with tears, weeping and groaning because he pays no attention to your offerings and doesn’t accept them with pleasure. 14 You cry out, “Why doesn’t the LORD accept my worship?” I’ll tell you why! Because the LORD witnessed the vows you and your wife made when you were young. But you have been unfaithful to her, though she remained your faithful partner, the wife of your marriage vows.
Even though the people had disobeyed God’s commands, they were now grieving because God was not accepting their sacrifices. The people didn’t understand, so Malachi explained it was because they forsook the marriage vows made to their Hebrew wives when they were young. Now the men had gone after other women even though those women did not believe in God.
REFLECT
Have you considered that marriage vows are not only made before others, but they are also made before the Lord who believes those vows should be honored?
RESPOND
Those who disregard the Lord’s instructions in the Bible may wonder why God is not blessing their lives. Read Proverbs 28:9 to see the answer.
