READ
Malachi 4:4-6
4 “Remember to obey the Law of Moses, my servant—all the decrees and regulations that I gave him on Mount Sinai for all Israel. 5 Look, I am sending you the prophet Elijah before the great and dreadful day of the LORD arrives. 6 His preaching will turn the hearts of fathers to their children, and the hearts of children to their fathers. Otherwise I will come and strike the land with a curse.”
Another word for Mt. Sinai is “Horeb,” found in some translations. God promises to send Elijah “before the great and dreadful day of the LORD arrives.” The “day of the LORD” seems to refer not only to a time of God’s coming to judge but also to a time of blessing to follow. This would refer to the Tribulation and Millennium. This statement about Elijah has caused uncertainty about when the fulfillment might be. Some believe it was fulfilled in John the Baptist, according to Jesus’ words in Matthew 11:11-15. Others believe it will be at the end of time. Elijah was also seen in the Transfiguration with Moses (see Matthew 17:2-4). Some believe he is one of the two witnesses in Revelation 11:3-12.
REFLECT
Make some notes of what you have learned from this study of Malachi. Look at your notes in the future to remind you of what you have learned.
RESPOND
This concludes the Old Testament, and it will be 400 more years before God gives further revelation as seen in the New Testament. In Matthew 1:1-17 the human line of Jesus the Messiah is recorded and verses 18-25 tell of His birth. Read the first chapter of Matthew to learn of these truths.
