A FEATURED INITIATIVE OF THE CENTER FOR SCRIPTURE ABSORPTION

America doesn’t have a Jesus awareness problem. It has a discipleship problem. Christian language still saturates American culture. Most Americans say they believe in God, and many identify as Christians. Churches remain quite visible in communities across the nation. And yet, when we look beneath the surface, a troubling gap appears between the number of people who have professed faith at some time in their lives, and the number of people whose lives bear any resemblance to a Christian disciple. That’s why Back to the Bible’s Center for Scripture Absorption (CSA) launched a new research initiative: The State of Christianity in America Today. Our goal was simple but urgent: not to measure how visible Christianity is, but how deeply Scripture is shaping lives. What we found was sobering. But it was also clarifying.
THREE FINDINGS THAT CHANGED THE CONVERSATION
Belief Is Widespread— Authentic Christianity Isn’t
A majority of Americans identify as followers of Jesus, yet only about one-third say they expect heaven because they are saved by grace through faith in Christ. Belief remains common, but the gospel is often thinly understood.
Scripture Engagement Is the Bottleneck
Nearly half of Americans engage Scripture zero days per week. Only about one in five engages the Bible at a level historically associated with life transformation. For many, Scripture is inspirational, but not formational.
Discipleship Has Stalled
Only about 31 percent of Americans say they have ever discipled or mentored another person in their faith (and 14% of those are unbelievers!). Christian faith is not consistently reproducing itself through intentional discipleship.
HOW DID WE GET HERE?
For decades, much of American Christianity measured what was easiest to see (e.g., attendance, decisions, impressions) while overlooking vital indicators like Scripture absorption, obedience, and spiritual maturity. Over time, what we measured shaped what we prioritized.

When engagement with God’s Word becomes optional, Christianity becomes a set of beliefs rather than a way of life. Scripture is affirmed but rarely practiced. Discipleship loses its power to reproduce mature believers, and transformation is talked about far more often than it is actually seen in changed habits, character, and obedience.
WHY THIS INITIATIVE MATTERS
The Center for Scripture Absorption exists to help the Church be clear-eyed about what is
actually happening and to measure what truly matters. It gives pastors, leaders, and ministries a truthful picture of where we are, so we can faithfully discern where God is calling us.
Because of faithful supporters like you, Back to the Bible is helping the Church recover its center: God’s Word, lived and loved.
