Day 1
READ
Genesis 1:14-16
14 Then God said, “Let lights appear in the sky to separate the day from the night. Let them be signs to mark the seasons, days, and years. 15 Let these lights in the sky shine down on the earth.” And that is what happened. 16 God made two great lights—the larger one to govern the day, and the smaller one to govern the night. He also made the stars.
God made lights to separate the days and nights. They were to be signs of the “seasons, days, and years.” In addition to the lights, God also made the stars. Some talk about the light years it takes for a light to reach the earth and think that shows it all developed over long ages. Why could not God have created all of this with the appearance of age, as He later did with Adam?
REFLECT
When you see these great lights, think of the God who created them.
RESPOND
The apostle John wrote about God being light when he wrote 1 John 1:5-7. It would be easy for the God of light to create other lights.
Day 2
READ
Genesis 1:17-19
17 God set these lights in the sky to light the earth, 18 to govern the day and night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And evening passed and morning came, marking the fourth day.
These verses reveal God’s purpose for the lights He created. Notice again that “God saw that it was good.” Some think evil had already entered the world, but that is not what God’s inspired word says. Only God was there at the time so why do not people take His word for what was occurring?
REFLECT
Would you rather rely on what God says about creation or on what others write about it even though they were not witnesses of creation?
RESPOND
With a friend, read the first chapter of Genesis and count the number of times you find the expression that “God saw that it was good.” Some think otherwise and say the Bible was written by men; that is also true of the books they read denying the God of miracles. The Bible is the only book God has inspired (see 2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20-21).
Day 3
READ
Genesis 1:20-21
20 Then God said, “Let the waters swarm with fish and other life. Let the skies be filled with birds of every kind.” 21 So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that scurries and swarms in the water, and every sort of bird—each producing offspring of the same kind. And God saw that it was good.
On the fifth day of creation God created the water animals and birds. They did not eventually become some other animals. They produced offspring “of the same kind.” Although there were many varieties in each kind, one kind never became another kind. This was according to God’s plan and He “saw that it was good.”
REFLECT
Thank the Lord that you have a creator who had the ability to create all of this and pronounce it “good.”
RESPOND
Many people love the flying animals and sea animals. It is easy to understand that God made them for the enjoyment of mankind that He would later create.
Day 4
READ
Genesis 1:22-23
22 Then God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply. Let the fish fill the seas, and let the birds multiply on the earth.” 23 And evening passed and morning came, marking the fifth day.
God commanded the animals He created to “be fruitful and multiply.” This would be true through future ages. The fifth day of creation included more of God’s creative work on that day. God was not tired from all of this work because He has all-power and ability to produce all kinds of miracles.
REFLECT
Think of what a great God you have. Many people have a God who is too small, but this is not true of the believer in Jesus.
RESPOND
One of God’s names is El-Shaddai that means “God Almighty.” This is the way He described Himself to Jacob when He changed Jacob’s name to “Israel” (see Genesis 35:11). That is the kind of God believers in Jesus serve.
Day 5
READ
Genesis 1:24-25
24 Then God said, “Let the earth produce every sort of animal, each producing offspring of the same kind—livestock, small animals that scurry along the ground, and wild animals.” And that is what happened. 25 God made all sorts of wild animals, livestock, and small animals, each able to produce offspring of the same kind. And God saw that it was good.
Every sort of animal was created for the earth. They were to produce offspring “of the same kind.” This was not done over long ages; it was done by a miracle-working God. The conclusion to all of His creative work was that He “saw that it was good.” The capstone of all of God’s creative work was yet to come on the sixth day.
REFLECT
Be thankful that you serve a miracle-working God. Perhaps the greatest miracle seen today is a changed life that comes by believing in Jesus for salvation.
RESPOND
Visit with a friend about how to share your faith. What are some examples you can give about how your life has changed because of Jesus? Expressing these can be used to help others see they also need Jesus in their lives.
