Day 1
RECEIVE
Luke 18:26-27
26 Those who heard this said, “Then who in the world can be saved?” 27 He replied, “What is impossible for people is possible with God.”
This was the response of the listeners when they heard Jesus say, “it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God” (Luke 18:25). They thought no one could be saved, but Jesus assured them, “What is impossible for people is possible with God.”
REFLECT
Have you thought about what is the greatest miracle God is performing today?
RESPOND
Visit with a friend about what Jesus told Nicodemus in John 3:5-8. One of the greatest miracles today is when a person trusts in Jesus as Savior and has his heart changed because he is a child of God.
Day 2
RECEIVE
Luke 18:28-30
28 Peter said, “We’ve left our homes to follow you.” 29 “Yes,” Jesus replied, “and I assure you that everyone who has given up house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the Kingdom of God, 30 will be repaid many times over in this life, and will have eternal life in the world to come.”
All of this caused Peter to think about what reward the disciples would receive for following Jesus. The Savior let it be known that whatever had been sacrificed would be repaid many times over. No one is able to give more than God. Spiritual rewards will come both in this life and in the next life. Followers of Jesus “will have eternal life in the world to come.”
REFLECT
Do you sometimes wonder what will be your benefits for following Jesus? This passage tells you.
RESPOND
A passage to read and to be read to others is Romans 8:31-39. This passage reveals nothing can separate the believer from the love of God. All of Romans chapter 8 is a wonderful passage to read and think about.
Day 3
RECEIVE
Luke 18:31-33
31 Taking the twelve disciples aside, Jesus said, “Listen, we’re going up to Jerusalem, where all the predictions of the prophets concerning the Son of Man will come true. 32 He will be handed over to the Romans, and he will be mocked, treated shamefully, and spit upon. 33 They will flog him with a whip and kill him, but on the third day he will rise again.”
Jesus endeavored to let His disciples know what would happen to Him in Jerusalem. Included in this message about all He would suffer was the great news that “on the third day he will rise again.” What would the disciples think about what He said? They had never heard of or seen such before so how would they understand the words of Jesus now?
REFLECT
Do you think today’s readers are sometimes too hard on the disciples? What would you have thought about Jesus’ statements had you been living then?
RESPOND
As is often said, “Hindsight is perfect.” John 12:14-16 explains one of these situations when something was not understood until after it occurred.
Day 4
RECEIVE
Luke 18:34
34 But they didn’t understand any of this. The significance of his words was hidden from them, and they failed to grasp what he was talking about.
Jesus had told His disciples what terrible things He would suffer in Jerusalem. His statements were so unusual they were not able to understand what He was saying. Later they would. One wonders what they thought after His crucifixion when they recalled some of the things He had told them.
REFLECT
Have you experienced on a human level something you did not understand until later?
RESPOND
Join with a friend and talk about the apostle Paul’s burden for his fellow Jews. Romans 10:1-4 tells of his desire for them to know one becomes right with God by believing in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Day 5
RECEIVE
Luke 18:35-39
35 As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind beggar was sitting beside the road. 36 When he heard the noise of a crowd going past, he asked what was happening. 37 They told him that Jesus the Nazarene was going by. 38 So he began shouting, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” 39 “Be quiet!” the people in front yelled at him. But he only shouted louder, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”
Jesus was on His way to Jerusalem but now approached Jericho. A blind beggar asked what the crowd noise was all about. He was told that Jesus was going by. The beggar apparently knew Jesus was the Messiah. He referred to Jesus as “the Son of David.” In the Bible the word “son” refers to a descendant. This beggar knew Jesus had been born in the line of David. He also believed Jesus could heal him as he asked Jesus to have mercy on him.
REFLECT
Do you realize that Jesus can provide all you need?
RESPOND
Even though Isaiah 43:1-2 was directed to the nation of Israel it provides a principle of comfort that has encouraged many believers today. Visit with a friend about how verses from the Bible can help bring comfort in times of trials and difficulties.
